Day 1: Sydney → Port Stephens

Distance: 200 km (2.5 hrs)

Right, time to get this roadie rolling. You’re leaving the big city behind and heading north to Port Stephens, a spot that’s got coastal views for days, sand dunes straight out of a desert movie, and dolphins just casually vibing in the ocean.

This route has everything, beach hangs, adventure sports, cracking food, and a hike with one of the best views in Oz. Let’s go.

An aerial view of Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

What to do?

Palm Beach

Start strong with a stop at Palm Beach (yep, Home & Away fans, this is the beach). Even if you don’t care about the soap, it’s a beaut of a spot. Go for a swim, hit the walking trails, or just grab a coffee and soak up the views.

The Entrance

This one’s random, but trust us, it’s worth a pit stop. Every arvo at 3:30 PM, a gang of pelicans rock up for a feed, and it’s oddly fascinating to watch. Never thought pelicans would be part of your road trip highlights, did ya?

Anna Bay Sand Dunes

This place is wild, the biggest coastal sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. And the best part? You can quad bike, 4WD, sandboard, or even ride a camel across them. Pick your weapon and send it.

Wild Dolphin Swimming

This isn’t some zoo enclosure, this is the real deal. The dolphins here just live their best lives in the wild, and you can jump in and swim alongside them or stay dry on the boat and watch them cruise past. Either way, it’s unreal.

Tomaree Head Summit Walk

If you can handle a bit of a climb, this hike is a must-do. Three lookout points along the way, each better than the last, and once you hit the top, boom, full 360-degree views over the coastline. Sunrise or sunset? Even better.

A stunning aerial view of Tomaree Head.

Where to eat?

Celsius, Kirribilli Wharf

This spot is floating above the harbour, literally. If you’re after a strong coffee and a solid brekkie to kick off the trip, this is where you wanna be. But let’s cut to the chase, the waffles are out of control. A MUST.

The Joey, Palm Beach

A beachside spot that knows how to do food right. The wood-fired pizzas slap, but here’s the inside scoop, there’s some serious hype around their pumpkin salad. Sounds rogue, but if the RatPack crew keeps raving about it, you know it’s worth trying. Good food, good vibes, and a solid stop before hitting the road again.

Rick Stein at Bannisters, Port Stephens

If seafood is your thing, welcome to heaven. Everything here is fresh, flavour-packed, and cooked to perfection. The chilli crab is messy, spicy, and worth every second of effort, while the seafood risotto is the kind of dish that’ll haunt your tastebuds (in a good way). If you eat here, don’t be surprised if every other seafood meal after this just doesn’t hit the same.

Atmos, Shoal Bay

This place goes off. Authentic Greek food, flowing drinks, and if the night’s buzzing, you’ll be breaking plates like you’re in Mykonos. Whether you’re here for the food, the fun, or both, it’s impossible not to have a good time.

Where to stay?

Bannisters, Port Stephens

If you’ve ever watched Mamma Mia and thought, “Yeah, I need that in my life,” then this is the place. Think ocean views from your balcony, stylish modern interiors, and an outdoor pool that basically begs for a sunset dip. It’s got that laid-back luxury feel, a little bit fancy, but still super chill.

Surfside Hostel, Port Stephens

If you’re keeping things budget-friendly but still want a clean, comfy spot with a great vibe, Surfside has you covered. The service is top-notch, the facilities are spotless, and it’s the perfect place to meet fellow road-trippers before hitting the next leg of your adventure.

Samurai Beach Campground

Free, wild, and literally on the beach. And we mean WILD! This spot is clothing optional, so don’t be surprised if some campers are rocking their birthday suits. Whether you’re going full nature mode or keeping things covered, it’s no frills – just you and the ocean.

Fingal Bay Holiday Park

Budget-friendly, hot showers, and right near the beach. Ideal if you want a mix of nature + actual facilities.

Day 2: Port Stephens → Port Macquarie

Distance: 250 km (3 hrs)

Day 2, and you’re keeping the good times rolling. Today’s drive takes you through some absolute gems, secluded beaches, epic lookouts, one of the tallest waterfalls in Oz, and even a hospital dedicated to saving koalas (yes, this is as wholesome as it sounds). Wrap it all up with a sunset at Tacking Point Lighthouse, and you’ve got yourself another day to remember.

Boats in Anchorage Marina at Port Stephens.

What to do?

This is Aussie seaside living at its finest, laid-back, beautiful, and packed with outdoor adventures. Whether you’re keen on boating, fishing, surfing, or just cruising the coastline, this spot has it all. If you’re feeling active, hit the Yacaaba Headland Walk for insane panoramic views over the ocean.

Seal Rocks

Tucked away from the crowds, Seal Rocks is one of those places that makes you wanna drop everything and move to the coast forever. White sand, crystal-clear water, and some of the best snorkelling and diving in NSW. Even if you just chill on the beach, you’ll leave feeling like you found a secret spot most people miss.

Wallis Lake & Boomerang Beach

If turquoise water and white sand are your thing, you’re gonna love Wallis Lake. Go for a swim, rent a kayak, or just kick back and take in the absolute serenity. Just down the road, Boomerang Beach is a surfer’s paradise, if you’re keen for a paddle, this is the spot to do it.

Ellenborough Falls

Say hello to one of the tallest waterfalls in Australia. Ellenborough Falls drops a massive 200 metres, and yep, it’s just as impressive as it sounds. You can either admire it from the lookout up top or take the steep(ish) trail down to the base for the full effect. Either way, this place is a must.

Port Macquarie Koala Hospital

Brace yourself for cute overload. The Koala Hospital is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating sick and injured koalas, and you can visit, learn about their work, and meet some of the little legends up close. One of those stops that’ll stick with you long after you leave.

A koala at Port Macquarie Koala Hospital.

North Brother Lookout

You know those spots where you just stop and stare because the view is that good? This is one of them. Sitting up high in Dooragan National Park, North Brother Lookout gives you jaw-dropping views over Laurieton, the coastline, and beyond. Absolute prime picnic spot if you’re feeling it.

Tacking Point Lighthouse

Iconic, stunning, and the perfect way to wrap up the day. Watching the sun go down from Tacking Point Lighthouse is a next-level experience, golden light over the ocean, a fresh sea breeze, and the whole place just vibing. If you only do one thing in Port Mac, make it this.

Where to eat?

Innerlight Tea Rooms

Start the day the right way in Port Stephens, with brekkie overlooking the ocean. This spot is all about fresh food and a relaxed vibe, perfect for a slow morning before hitting the road.

Sails, Port Macquarie

If you’re in the mood for something a little more boujee, Sails has you covered. Waterfront dining, top-tier food, and some of the best seafood in town. Perfect if you wanna treat yourself after a big day of adventuring.

Little Shack, Port Macquarie

If you’re after big flavour and laid-back vibes, this place is a must. The burgers? Unreal. The fresh coconuts? Exactly what you need after a long drive. The atmosphere? Tropical, chilled, and exactly where you wanna be.

Enzo’s

Every good road trip needs a top-tier pizza stop, and this is Port Macquarie’s finest. Enzo’s serves up crispy, woodfired goodness in a super relaxed setting. If you love solid food with a great vibe, you’ll love this place.

Beach House, Port Macquarie

Ask any local where to go for classic pub food with an insane view, and they’ll send you here. The chicken schnitzel is a RatPack favourite, and paired with a cold one and a seat overlooking the water? That’s a winning combo.

Blue Cow Gelato

You can’t roll through Port Macquarie without grabbing a scoop (or three) from Blue Cow. Fresh, creamy, and flavours that slap, this is the kind of gelato that turns a quick stop into a full-blown experience.

Where to stay?

Tuppenny Rd, Port Macquarie

If you’re keen to wake up to one of the best sunrises on the east coast (for free!), this is your spot. Pull up, roll out your swag, and wake up to the kind of views people pay top dollar for.

YHA Port Macquarie

This YHA is on another level. Super aesthetic, spotless, and packed with chill-out spaces, it’s one of those places you check into and immediately feel at home.

Macquarie Waters

A boutique apartment stay with a rooftop jacuzzi? Yeah, this one speaks for itself. Insane views, stylish rooms, and a prime location, if you’re feeling fancy, this is the move.

Ozzie Pozzie YHA

A proper backpacker fave – this place has a massive kitchen, heaps of lounge areas, and a super relaxed vibe. Perfect if you’re keen to meet fellow travellers and swap road trip stories over a few beers.

Day 3: Port Macquarie → Coffs Harbour

Distance: 160 km (2 hrs)

You’re deep into the roadie now, and today’s route is absolute gold. We’re talking sunrise lookouts, wild beaches, epic boardwalks, a prison with a view (yep, really), and the most iconic roadside stop in Aussie history, the Big Banana.

An aerial view of Park Beach and Macauleys Headland, near Coffs Harbour.

What to do?

Harry’s Lookout

Early starts aren’t always fun, but trust us, this one’s worth it. Perched on the cliffs above Shelly Beach, Harry’s Lookout serves up sunrise on a whole new level. The sky lights up, the waves roll in, and for a moment, it’s just you and the ocean. Magic.

North Haven & Laurieton Lookout

A quick detour, but 100% worth it. The drive winds through classic small-town Aussie coastal vibes, then suddenly, bam, panoramic views over the river, ocean, and mountain ranges. One of those places that makes you wanna just pull up a chair and stay forever.

South West Rocks & Trial Bay Gaol

Not every day you visit a prison with a beachfront view, but here we are. Trial Bay Gaol is an old convict-built prison with seriously cool history and even better views. Wander through the ruins, then head down to South West Rocks, one of NSW’s most underrated beaches. Clear blue water, soft sand, and less of a crowd.

Urunga Boardwalk & Wetlands

If you need a moment of peace on your roadie, this is the spot. The Urunga Boardwalk stretches over the wetlands and right out into the ocean, it’s long, it’s stunning, and you’ll struggle to take a bad photo here. Perfect stop for a quick stretch and a deep breath before getting back on the road.

The Big Banana

No east coast road trip is complete without stopping at the Big Banana. It’s iconic, slightly ridiculous, and absolutely necessary. Snap the classic tourist pic, grab a choc-dipped frozen banana, and if you’re feeling extra, check out the water park, toboggan rides, or mini golf.

Muttonbird Island

Right in the heart of Coffs, Muttonbird Island is a short, steep climb that rewards you big time. Unreal views over the harbour, crashing waves, and if it’s whale season, expect a front-row seat to the show.

Forest Sky Pier

Tucked into the hills behind Coffs, the Forest Sky Pier is one of those spots that makes you feel tiny in the best way. Walk out over the treetops and take in the insane coastal views stretching out in front of you. Feels like something out of a movie.

Park Beach

After a day of adventuring, this is the spot to kick back. Whether you’re up for a surf, a swim, or just a lazy afternoon on the sand, Park Beach delivers. Golden sand, rolling waves, and solid beachy vibes.

Where to eat?

Milk Bar, Port Macquarie

Before you leave Port Mac, fuel up here. The Mediterranean toast is a RatPack office fave, and the portions are MASSIVE. Proper road trip fuel.

Sea Salt, Coffs Harbour

A hidden gem that serves up some of the best fish and chips in NSW. Big call? Maybe. But once you taste that crispy, golden goodness, you’ll get it.

Latitude 30

If you’re feeling a sit-down meal with top-tier food, this is the one. A bit on the pricey side, but totally worth it, fresh seafood, solid cocktails, and a proper good dining experience.

Peach & Wolf Bakery

If you stop here and don’t get a cinnamon scroll, you’ve made a terrible mistake. Everything here is fresh, flaky, and dangerously good. Consider yourself warned.

Where to stay?

BreakFree Aanuka Beach Resort

This place ticks all the boxes. Right on the beach, big resort-style pools, and the kind of spot that makes you feel like you’re on holiday, even if it’s just for one night.

But, it’s on private land, so visitors enter at their own risk – always respect the environment and leave no trace.

Tea Tree Lake

Byron is all about natural wellness, and this place is as natural as it gets. The tea tree oil-infused water gives the lake a deep brown tint, but it’s packed with skin-loving goodness. Go for a dip and come out feeling like you’ve just had a spa treatment.

Go Turtle Snorkelling

Byron Bay’s marine life is next level, and if you wanna get up close with turtles, rays, and even the occasional dolphin, this is the way to do it. Snorkelling at Julian Rocks is one of the best wildlife experiences on the east coast.

Expect one last dreamy Noosa breakfast, a few scenic detours, wildlife encounters, and a sunset that’ll send this trip out in style. Brissy might be a city, but it’s packed with green spaces, killer food spots, and some iconic Aussie experiences. Let’s make this final day count.

Brisbane glowing orange with sunlight.

What to do?

One Last Swim at Noosa Main Beach

You’ve come this far, one last salty dip is mandatory. Noosa Main Beach at sunrise is pure magic, glass-like water, golden light, and no crowds. If you’ve got time, cruise into Noosa National Park for a quick coastal walk and keep an eye out for a sneaky koala or two chilling in the trees.

Scenic Detour – Glass House Mountains Lookout

Back on the road, but don’t gun it to Brissy just yet, this detour is worth every second. The Glass House Mountains rise straight out of the earth like something from another planet, and the lookout gives you 360-degree views of Queensland’s hinterland at its best. Prime spot for one last road trip pic.

If you haven’t already ticked it off, this is your last chance. Australia Zoo is WAY more than just a zoo, this place is a full-blown wildlife experience. Get up close with kangaroos, crocs, and koalas or catch one of the epic animal shows that’ll have you grinning ear to ear.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

If Australia Zoo is a bit too much for your schedule, Lone Pine is a quieter, but just as epic, way to get up close with Aussie wildlife. Cuddle a koala, feed a kangaroo, and learn some fun facts to impress your mates back home.

The Wheel of Brisbane

Rolling into Brissy, you’ll spot this giant Ferris wheel sitting right on the river. Jump on for a slow, scenic ride with panoramic views over the city.

Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium

If you wanna end the roadie on a cosmic level, this planetarium is a hidden gem. Space exhibits, interactive stargazing shows, and the kinda place that makes you wanna book a one-way ticket to Mars.

Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens & Lookout

Last stop, and it’s a banger. Mt Coot-tha is the best place to watch the sun drop over the Brisbane skyline. Either hike up, drive up, or just rock up with a drink in hand and take in the view. If you’re the sentimental type, this is where you reflect on the absolute weapon of a road trip you just smashed out.

Other Things to Consider on Your Road Trip from Sydney to Brisbane

Is the Sydney to Brisbane road trip worth it?

Mate, 1000% yes. This isn’t just a drive, it’s an adventure through some of the most unreal spots in Oz. Dreamy beaches, epic waterfalls, cracking sunsets, big cities, tiny coastal towns, and enough “holy sh*t” moments to last a lifetime. Whether you’re chasing surf, wildlife, foodie gems, or just good old-fashioned freedom, this trip delivers.

How long should I take for this trip?

Minimum? A week. Ideal? Two.

Seven days gives you just enough time to hit the highlights, but if you can stretch it to 10-14 days, you’ll have plenty of time for detours, chill days, and spontaneous stops (which, let’s be real, are always the best ones).

Can you do this trip in one go?

Technically? Yes. Should you? Absolutely not.

It’s 1,000+ km from Sydney to Brisbane, if you smash it out in one go, you’ll miss EVERYTHING that makes this trip epic. Take your time, hit the scenic routes, stop for a swim, and enjoy the ride.

When’s the best time of year to go?

Honestly? There’s no bad time, but if we’re picking favourites:

  • Spring (Sep-Nov) & Autumn (Mar-May): Perfect temps, fewer crowds, all the good vibes.
  • Summer (Dec-Feb): Long days, beach weather, but peak season = higher camper costs & busier spots.
  • Winter (Jun-Aug): Still warm up north, quieter roads, but BYO hoodie for those crisp mornings.

What’s the weather like along the way?

It’s pretty damn good year-round, but it changes as you go:

  • Sydney → Goldie: Coastal breezes, mild winters, hot summers.
  • Goldie → Brisbane: Warmer, tropical feels the further north you get.
  • Rule of thumb? Pack for summer, but chuck in a hoodie and some layers for those early mornings & windy beach nights.

Camper, car, or 4WD – what’s the best ride?

Camper. Hands down. No question.

  • Freedom to sleep where you want.
  • Wake up to ocean views (without paying hotel prices).
  • Cook your own feeds and save cash for the fun stuff.
  • No unpacking and repacking every night.

A car works if you’re booking hostels/hotels along the way, but if you want the full roadie experience? A camper is the move. And lucky for you, we can hook you up with the best deal.

What should I pack for this trip?

Pack light, pack smart. Here’s the must-haves:
✅ Swimmers (you’ll be in the water daily)
✅ Sunnies & sunscreen (that Aussie sun is NO joke)
✅ A good playlist and offline maps (some areas have zero reception)
✅ Flip-flops and comfy walking shoes (beach + hikes = both needed)
✅ Bug spray (mozzies don’t mess around)
✅ A hoodie for cool nights (especially in winter)
✅ Reusable water bottle (stay hydrated, save cash)
✅ GoPro or phone with solid camera storage (you’ll be snapping nonstop)

Where are the best free camping spots?

Free camping = the secret to keeping your road trip budget-friendly. Some solid spots along the way:

  • Pebbly Beach (NSW): Wake up to kangaroos chilling outside your camper.
  • Samurai Beach Campground (NSW): Off-grid, right near the sand dunes.
  • Tuppenny Rd (Port Macquarie): Free, quiet, and killer sunrise views.
  • Noosa North Shore Campground (QLD): Beachfront spot, close to Noosa’s best bits.
  • Coffs Creek Rest Area (NSW): Basic but a solid free stop near the beach.

Is this a good trip for first-time travellers?

Absolutely. This route is super beginner-friendly, good roads, plenty of places to stop, and a mix of buzzing cities and quiet coastal escapes. Whether you’re a solo traveller, a couple, or rolling with your mates, this is one of the best ways to ease into Aussie road-tripping.
