What is Uluru?
What is Uluru? It was named Ayers Rock by settlers (this is probs what you’ve heard it called), but its aboriginal name is Uluru.
Brief history:
Uluru is sacred to the Pitjantjatjara Anangu, the Aboriginal people of the area.
Aboriginal people have lived in the area around Uluru and Kata Tjuta (a group of large domed rock formations near by) for at least 30,000 years.
The Central Australian landscape, where Uluru is located, is believed to have been created at the beginning of time by ancestral beings.
Where is it?
Uluru is located in the Red Centre, Northern Territory.
You’ll find it in the World Heritage listed site of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park that stretches a whopping 311,000 acres!!
It is 348 m high and measures 9.4 km in circumference. Told you it was huge!
How to get there
We recommend hoping on a tour. This way you don’t have to worry about navigating through the red centre.
Getting there:
- You can fly directly to Ayers Rock Airport or you can fly into Alice Springs and drive 460 km/5 hour drive.
- Or, some tours start in Adelaide, Melbourne or Darwin and take you to the Red Centre.

This tour will give you an awesome experience in the legendary Outback of Australia, expect to have an adventure like no other on this tour as it takes you hiking through the Kings Canyon, camp in the bush, see stars like you’ve never seen before, share campfire stories, see the beaut Uluru not only at sunset but also at sunrise, learn about the aboriginal culture and history of the area and meet a whole bunch of legends!!
You will get picked up from Ayers Rock Airport or from Ayers Rock Resort hotel and begin your tour from there.
This tour is epic! You can choose either 4 days/3 nights or 3 days/2 nights of fun in one of the most incredible locations on earth!
Top Deck tours
These trips tend to be longer than the above as they take you from some of Australia top locations in to the Red Centre on bus tour of about 30ish people. So a great way to meet other travellers.
- You can travel from Darwin to Alice Springs (12 days/11 nights).
- From Melbourne to Darwin – hitting up all the Outback must-see’s in between (21 days/20 nights).
- Or, from Sydney to Alice Springs on a tour from beach to bush (20 days all inclusive).
