Alright, hear me out. Melbourne’s wicked, top-tier coffee, vibey bars, and more laneways than you can count. But sometimes? You just need to bounce.

You know the feeling… sun’s out, you’ve got zero plans, and all you want is to hit the road with a mate, a decent playlist and a boot full of snacks.

Lucky for you, we’ve done the hard work (aka the fun bit), cruised every direction outta the city and found all the best spots for a cheeky day trip. Some are the big names, others are under-the-radar beauties that barely make the ‘gram.

Here’s our hit list, packed with coastlines, cosy towns, rainforest walks, wine stops, and one or two weird little gems that’ll have you saying, “Why didn’t we do this sooner?”

Coastal Vibes & Beachy Roadies

Mornington Peninsula

Distance from Melbourne: 1 hr 15 mins

If you’re chasing that salty air and want a day that feels like a mini holiday, this one’s a no-brainer. Start with a dip in the clearest water around, soak in the hot springs with those hilltop views, then wind your way through seaside towns. Arthur’s Seat lookout? Must-do.

Torquay to Jan Juc

Distance from Melbourne: 1hr 30 mins

Kick it off with a coastal walk from Torquay to Jan Juc – think epic cliff views, surf town energy and a salty breeze in ya face. Don’t miss Point Danger Lookout or Rocky Point along the way for some solid photo ops.

Ginger Monkey Café does a next-level lunch, and if you’re feeling spicy, swing past the surf outlets or book a cheeky surf lesson. Torquay’s the start of the Great Ocean Road for a reason.

Phillip Island

Distance from Melbourne: 2 hrs

This one’s got it all – penguins waddling along the beach, coastal boardwalks, and the chance to spot whales, seals and dolphins if you jump on a cruise. Grab pastries at The Store, hit Cape Woolamai for sunset, and if you’ve got time, Churchill Island’s full of animals and farm vibes.

Frankston & Seaford

Distance from Melbourne: 1 hr

One of those underrated gems you don’t expect much from, then end up loving. Start with the Kananook Creek trail, then explore the sculpture park, wetlands, and chill at the pier for sunset. Round it out with a solid dinner and a scoop of gelato. Coastal city meets mellow local energy.

Heronswood, Dromana

Distance from Melbourne: 1hr 15mins

A quiet escape with old-school charm. Heronswood Gardens is a peaceful spot with bay views, a garden-to-plate café (yep – they grow their own produce right here), and dog-friendly lawns where you can lounge all day. Feels like a little slice of Europe tucked into the Mornington hills.

Phillip-Island

Nature Lovers & Wildlife Wanderers

Moonlit Sanctuary

Distance from Melbourne: 50 mins

Wanna feed a kangaroo or say hey to a koala? This is the spot. Moonlit’s small, intimate and perfect for getting up close with Aussie wildlife. You’ll get to hand-feed roos, meet dingoes, and snap a cheeky koala selfie (just no cuddles – VIC rules!). Laid-back, interactive and only just outside the city – easy win if you’re craving nature without a mega drive.

Tarra-Bulga National Park

Distance from Melbourne: 2hrs 30 mins

Bit of a mission, but so worth it. Think towering ferns, swinging bridges, and barely another soul around. It’s peaceful, dramatic and proper rainforest territory – a solid one for anyone who wants a full escape from city life.

Hanging Rock Reserve

Distance from Melbourne: 1hr

Short drive, big payoff. This place has a kinda eerie, magical feel and the hike up gives you killer views. It’s got mystery, rock formations, and bushland – perfect if you want something a bit different but still doable in a day.

Small Towns & Countryside Cruisin’

Daylesford

Distance from Melbourne: 1 hr 30 mins

Cosy, scenic and just the right amount of boujee. Start with brunch at Cliffy’s (their Turkish eggs are the one), then wander through local shops, sip mulled wine at The Convent, and finish with a lakeside stroll and cider tasting. One of those towns you’ll wanna come back to, guaranteed.

Loch, South Gippsland

Distance from Melbourne: 1 hr 45 mins

Wholesome vibes all day. Tiny town, big character. Olive at Loch serves up a cracker of a brunch, and the local shops are full of little surprises. It’s the kind of place you accidentally spend hours in just soaking up the quiet.

Yarra Valley

Distance from Melbourne: 1 hr

If wine is your love language, this one’s essential. Hit up a couple cellar doors, taste your way through the Chocolaterie, and soak in those rolling green views. Whether you’re into red, white or just the cheese board, it’s a top-tier day out.

Unique Days Out With a Bit of Quirk

Puffing Billy Railway

Distance from Melbourne: 1 hr

A classic for a reason. Hanging your legs out the side of an old-school steam train as it rumbles through the forest? It’s way more fun than it sounds. Great one for a bit of nostalgia and a change of pace from the usual road trip.

Sovereign Hill

Distance from Melbourne: 1.5 hrs

Step back into gold rush times and get stuck into the old-timey madness. Actors in costume, mine tours, free gold panning, and old-school sweets (boiled lollies are a must). It’s defo worth the ticket price if you give it 3+ hours – heaps to see, and way more fun than you’d expect, especially with mates.

The Dandenong Ranges

Distance from Melbourne: 1 hr

Rainforest vibes without the long haul. Walk through lush fern forests, swing by a few tea rooms, and explore cute towns like Sassafras and Olinda. It’s all very green, very peaceful, and the scones are outrageous.

How to Pick the Right Day Trip (Not Just the Closest One)

We’re not here to tell you to “pack sunscreen” or “wear comfy shoes”, you’ve heard that before. But we will help you avoid picking the wrong trip just because it looked pretty on Pinterest.

Here’s what to actually think about before you leave the city:

What’s your vibe today?

Are you in the mood to sweat it out on a hike, swim and chill, or eat and drink your way through a cute town?

  • Craving space and zero crowds? → Tarra-Bulga or Hanging Rock.
  • Want a bit of everything — beach, food, and low-key vibes? → Mornington or Torquay.
  • Feeling lazy, fragile or just hungry? → Daylesford or Yarra Valley’s your move.

How much time have you really got?

Not just “we’re free today”, but like, are you okay with a 2.5-hour drive each way? Some of the best spots (hi, Tarra-Bulga 👋) are a bit of a trek. That’s fine,  just don’t plan it if you’ve gotta be back by 6.

  • Under 1 hour? → Hit Moonlit Sanctuary, the Dandenongs, or Frankston/Seaford.
  • 1–2 hours? → You’re golden. Most places on this list are in that sweet spot.
  • Over 2 hours? → Still epic, but you’ll need to leave early to make a full day of it. Or better yet, turn it into a cheeky overnighter.  (Hint: we know a camper crew…)

Don’t sleep on weather & timing

Some of these trips hit different depending on the season or time of day.

  • Mornington or Torquay in summer = lush beach day. Winter? Still decent, but bring a jumper and aim for a hot springs finish.
  • Hanging Rock early in the morning? Kinda eerie, kinda amazing. Arvo? Busy and full of prams.
  • Phillip Island? Skip the crowds and go midweek if you can. Sunset at Cape Woolamai is chef’s kiss.

Wanna check the vibes before you go? We always use WillyWeather or the BoM app to scope the weather and tides.

Want the real tip? Combine stops.

If you’re doing a roadie, don’t just hit one spot and bounce back, stack a couple of stops together and turn it into a mini-adventure. Some of the best day trips around Melbourne are even better when you connect the dots.

Here’s how to do it right 👇

The Clean + Chill Combo

Heronswood Gardens → Sorrento → Peninsula Hot Springs

Kick it off wandering through the gardens in Dromana (it’s quiet, green and dog-friendly), cruise to Sorrento for a late brekkie and beach stroll, then finish the day soaking in the hilltop pool at the hot springs as the sun dips. That’s what we call a full reset.

Coastline Energy

Torquay → Jan Juc walk → Surf outlets → Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie

Start with a walk along the cliffs between Torquay and Jan Juc, grab a bite at Ginger Monkey, then shop the outlet stores for a sneaky surf bargain. On the way back? Swing by the Chocolaterie for ice cream that hits hard.

Frankston Loop

Frankston Boardwalk → Kananook Creek Trail → Seaford Wetlands → McClelland Sculpture Park

This one’s for the low-key explorers. Get a coffee, walk the boardwalk, head into the wetlands for a quiet wander, and wrap up at the sculpture park, it’s chill, local, and no tour buses in sight.

Wildlife + Wine? Don’t mind if we do.

Moonlit Sanctuary → Mornington Peninsula Wineries

Hand-feed kangaroos in the morning, sip wine in the arvo. Enough said. This one’s an absolute win if you want nature and a cheeky glass of something cold by lunchtime.

Mornington

Nature Nerd Day Out

Hanging Rock → Macedon Ranges → Lunch in Woodend

Start with the eerie hike up Hanging Rock (go early, it’s got mystery vibes in the morning), explore the nearby Macedon Ranges if you want more forest, then head to Woodend for a pub lunch or a bakery pie that’ll change your life.
