What to Do

Palm Beach

Only an hour from Sydney and a total beaut of a pit stop, Palm Beach is where you stretch the legs and soak in those laid-back coastal vibes. This spot is famous for being the backdrop of Home and Away, but even if soap dramas ain’t ya thing, the views here are insane and defo worth the detour.

The Entrance

This one’s a crowd fave, and not just for the pelican feeding! The Entrance is a classic seaside town, perfect for a cheeky fish ‘n’ chips stop. Take a stroll along the water, dip your toes in the ocean or just vibe out by the lake.

Catherine Hill Bay

This place is a bit of us, old mining town energy meets coastal magic. It’s super photogenic with that rustic jetty and the waves rolling in behind it. Keep the camera handy, this is one for the ‘gram. Ideal spot for a chill out before rolling into Newy.

Arrive in Newcastle

You’ve made it to Newy – this underrated coastal city has some wicked history, epic ocean baths, and a proper good buzz. Time to park up the camper, stretch the legs and explore.

Anzac Memorial Walk

This one’s for the views, sweeping coastlines and clifftop vibes. The Anzac Memorial Walk is only 450m long, but what it lacks in distance it makes up for in views. Built to commemorate 100 years of Anzac spirit, it’s got heart and a whole lotta scenery.

Newcastle Museum

Quick culture hit? Sorted. Learn about Newy’s transformation from an industrial city into the buzzing little spot it is today. There’s some interactive exhibits and plenty of cool local history to dive into.

Merewether Ocean Baths

Finish the day with a splash at the Merewether Ocean Baths, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere! Saltwater, sunshine and free entry. You already know it’s a vibe. Sunset swims hit different here.

Where to Eat

☕️ Sunrise Kiosk – Sydney

Before you hit the road, swing by this local fave. I had the strong almond flat white and it was spot on – bold and smooth, just how I like it. Their cheese bread? Unreal. Light, fluffy, cheesy goodness. Grab a takeaway and hit the highway.

🍝 The Joey – Palm Beach

Pulled in here for a cheeky lunch and wow, the crab linguine is NEXT LEVEL. Fresh, buttery and packed with flavour. It’s one of those dishes that makes you lowkey emotional it’s that good.

🐟 WaterEdge Seafood – The Entrance

A hidden gem right by the water. Fresh as seafood, lush ocean views, and the chef is an absolute legend, full of joy and it shows in the food. Plus, the prices are proper decent too. 100% recommend grabbing a plate of grilled barramundi or their prawn pasta. Bit of a RatPack classic.

🌮 Antojitos – Mayfield, Newcastle

If you’re craving a feed with flavour and a good vibe, this is your spot. Proper Mexican street food, loaded tacos, and the burritos are stacked. One of our fave spots in the area when we’re hangry and need a feast.

🐠 Scratchleys on the Wharf – Newcastle

Seafood with a view. You’re basically dining over the water here. The grilled seafood platter is a bit of a treat, and sunset dinners here hit real nice. Fancy but not snobby, our kinda place.

🍕 In Forno – Newcastle

Aaaand if you’re in the mood for Italian, this one delivers. Fresh handmade pasta, woodfired pizzas, and the flavours are bold. Every dish we tried was bangin’, big tick from us.

Where to Eat

☕Smiling Monk Coffee – Newcastle

Before you even leave Newy – sort ya morning brew. I followed a local tip and landed at Smiling Monk… and whoa. The almond flatty was smooth, smoky, kinda chocolatey?? Sounds random but it hit just right. No servo coffee slander here – the locals know their beans and this place bangs. Defo one to add to the favourites list 🫶

🍸 Shoal Bay Country Club

Right on the water and giving off absolute holiday vibes. Get a cocktail in hand, grab some share plates (the calamari is a bit of us), and soak in the view. Easy win for lunch or sundowners.

Walk the Coastal Track

Chuck on your runners and hit the Port Macquarie Coastal Walk – it’s a beaut 9km track that links up most of the beaches, with rainforest patches, epic lookouts and even a whale-spotting platform if you’re there in season. One of the best ways to explore the town.

The Koala Hospital

A RatPack-approved must-do. Swing by the Koala Hospital for a wholesome arvo. It’s run by volunteers who care for injured and sick koalas – you’ll get a bit of education and meet some of the residents (they’re adorable, obviously).

🍨 Blue Cow Gelato

Okay, this place… chef’s kiss. Locally made gelato with a banging range of flavours. My fave? The pistachio. Not too sweet, just the right balance – as my mum would say, “It nice.” Grab a double scoop and thank us later.

🥪 Village Pantry – Coffs Harbour

Cutest brunch spot, hands down. The crew here are super friendly (shoutout to the waitress who made sure our chai was the exact right temp 🙌). The Eggs Benny is creamy and delish, and the Turkish Eggs pack a punch. Beautiful presentation too – your phone eats first here.

🐟 Sea Salt

Fish and chips that actually live up to the hype. Fresh, crispy and the perfect post-swim feast. Might even be one of the best fish and chips we’ve ever had – and that’s a big call, but we’re standing by it.

Yep – kangas with a sea view. Classic Oz. It’s a beaut way to stretch the legs and soak up some wild coastline.

Maclean – The Scottish Town of Oz

Roll through Maclean for a quirky little cultural switch-up. This place leans hard into its Scottish roots – we’re talking tartan pole art, Gaelic street signs and even a highland festival if you time it right. It’s a fun, random pit stop that adds a bit of flavour to your road trip.

  • Swimwear & beach towel (obvs)
  • Thongs (flip flops, not the other kind 😅)
  • Hoodie or jumper for cooler nights
  • Power bank & phone charger (campers come with USB ports)
  • Snacks (you’ll want ‘em on those longer stretches)
  • Offline maps (download Google Maps just in case)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Bug spray (especially if you’re free camping)
  • Your fave playlist or podcasts (roadtrip tunes are essential)

🎒 Pack light – less is more when you’re living the vanlife.

Where can I free camp along the way?

Yep – free camping is 100% doable on this route.

Some local councils offer free or cheap beachside camps, and a few pubs even let you stay out back if you grab a meal.

Download WikiCamps or CamperMate – these apps are total lifesavers. They’ll show you:

  • Where to camp (free & paid)
  • Where to refill water
  • Where to dump waste (if your camper has a toilet/shower)
  • Local tips from other roadtrippers

RatPack Pro Tip: Mix up your stays – free camp when you can, and treat yourself to a powered site now and then to recharge (literally).

Is this trip good for first-time roadtrippers?

It’s perfect for first-timers.

You’ve got short driving days, towns every 1-2 hours, good road conditions and epic beach stops.

The East Coast is super popular with backpackers and vanlifers, so you’ll never feel too far from civilisation (or a cheeky servo for snacks).

Whether you’re flying solo, roadtripping with your bestie, or travelling as a couple, this one’s a chilled intro to Aussie campervan life.

And there it is – 6 epic days of roadtrip magic, ticked off like the legends you are. From the chaos of Sydney to the cruisy calm of Byron Bay, you’ve surfed, hiked, eaten your way up the coast, and collected enough stories to dine out on for weeks (or years).

If this itinerary’s got you buzzing (we get it, it’s a belter), then let’s get your ride sorted.
